Hotel Inspiration: The Jane

June 16, 2011 § 2 Comments

Aside from my passion for design, I am a true lover of history.

I often find that I gravitate towards interiors that harken back memories of the past and exude some sense of Victorian charm. The Jane Hotel does just that, and without feeling too cheesy or commercialized.

The Jane

113 Jane Street New York, NY 10014 212-924-6700

The building was actually first used as a hotel for sailors and dubbed the American Seaman’s Friend Society Sailors’ Home and Institute. In 1912, the survivors of the Titanic stayed there until the end of the American inquiry into the ship’s sinking. About 30 years later the YMCA took over the building for a short time until it became The Jane. The hotel became a hot spot during the 1980s and 90s for its bohemian crowd and rock’n’roll shows. Today you’ll find your share of hip bankers enjoying a drink at the hotel bar as well as your European tourists looking for a good bargain. {More history about the Jane}

LOVE how they designed their Captain’s Cabin. The room is full of color and pattern but there definitely is a balance that allows for everything to work. It’s a room that takes you back in time but without being too cheesy. They took the best elements of early 20th century/Victorian design and translated it into a modern aesthetic.

One thing about the Jane is that most of the rooms have communal bathrooms, however, I do not mind sharing a bathroom if it looks like this! Love the subway tiling (classic) and the exposed stainless vanity with marble countertops. The dark wood doors and black accent tiling gives a nice pop of contrast

Lounge area- Old Word charm with a Bohemian vibe

Coffered ceilings & industrial pendant lights set the mood for this cozy bar setting

bright and cheer dining area- love the lime colored upholstery and the black and white checkered floors!

So I used to be a claw-foot tub kind of girl..

Not anymore! Is this tub not amazing?? I can’t imagine it’d be that expensive to install either. It’s essentially just a piece of thick cut glass inserted between two tiled walls. Tubs can appear so bulky and outdated, but this glass version is beautifully sleek and modern.
